DIY was Nate Hanscom’s MO during high school.
He took some guitar lessons, practiced into the wee hours, then enlisted a couple of friends and formed a band called The Chives. He scrounged for recording equipment, and the trio put down three very listenable tracks.
After graduation, he headed to Husson College in Bangor to study audio engineering. After a couple of semesters of classroom instruction, he returned to Portland to try audio engineering in the wild. For the last couple of years, he’s been OOD (operator on deck) at WGAN radio station, scripting and editing news segments. It’s his voice that reads the two minute news spots on the weekends. “I like meeting people and coming up with stories,” he said.
Currently, he’s taking courses at SMCC while building the skills to find work doing live sound at a small venue or in audio engineering. “It’s a weird winding road but a road I’m comfortable taking,” he said.
