Sam and I met in English class at Casco Bay High School, and we hit it off talking about Terry Pratchett (he was not the assigned reading at the time, so our conversation was not on task, the typical freshmen we were). We ended up dating through high school, went long-distance through college, and eventually returned to Maine once we had our degrees. Sam ran off to sea and got her USCG Captain's license, and after trying out sailing myself I followed after her and got my Captain's license as well. After working as deckhands for years on tallships and captaining smaller boats, we now own a business together in Portland called Nautilus Sailing Company where we get to show people how beautiful Maine's coastline is and do what we love every day. Since it's just the two of us, we take turns on who is officially the Captain on a given day. It makes the mundanities of life a whole lot more enjoyable when you get to do nearly everything with your partner!
