The Jerry Davis History Scholarship was established by Jerry’s wife and children and encouraged by his friends and former colleagues. It honors the memory and legacy of Jerry, a lifelong learner, athlete, and educator.
Over the span of 36 years, at Portland High School, Jerry taught history to thousands of students. He also started a psychology department at PHS and had students explore the works of Freud and Jung. Jerry coached football, girls’ soccer, indoor track, cross country, and outdoor track at PHS, Cheverus, and Waynflete. His wisdom and kindness influenced many.
The Jerry Davis History Scholarship will award two $1,500 scholarships to Portland High School graduates annually. To be eligible, the student must demonstrate a genuine interest in social sciences and have participated in clubs or athletics at PHS. The student must also intend to earn a bachelor’s degree in Maine and ideally plan to pursue the teaching profession.
